iOS Map Viewer Announcement
ATHENS, GA (June 20, 2011)—Partner Software is pleased to announce a version of the Partner Map Viewer for Apple iOS devices, including the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
Since 1997, Partner has focused on map-based applications that are simple to use, fast and compatible with the wide range of desktop, laptop, tablet and handheld computers used in offices, trucks and the field.
The iOS viewer includes a full copy of the utility maps so it can run disconnected from the network. Standard map viewing features, such as panning, zooming, data selection and viewing, seach and GPS integration, are included. Map rendering is fast, fluid and responsive. Dynamic layers can display outages, vehicle locations, inspections and other modules. These can be updated over Wi-Fi or mobile networks when they are available but still function disconnected.
The new Map Viewer is currently in beta testing and should be generally available by the end of 2011. Early response has been strong.
"We have worked with Partner for several years on putting digital maps in our trucks," says Steven Latham, Manager of IT at South Plains Electric Cooperative in Lubbock, TX. "They have always come up with new and creative ways to put digital maps in the field. From palms and truck computers to tablets and laptops Partner has always helped us meet our goals with our maps. With the new tablet technology that the iPad offers and Parnter's software technology, we are getting a device that looks like it is going to meet our mobile needs like we had always envisioned when we went to mobile digital maps. We are very excited about this new technology and what it will do for us."
Partner's iOS Map Viewer marks its return to handheld and mobile operating systems. "I've been waiting for a good tablet solution for 15 years. The introduction of the iPad and competing products from Android vendors finally meets my customers' needs for portability, usability and battery life," Paul Reavis, President of Partner Software, said.
The iPad, iPhone and iPod run an operating system named iOS. "Unfortunately, iOS doesn't run traditional desktop apps or Java, so we couldn't just use our current Map Application Platform," Reavis said.
While Partner plans on also supporting the Android and Windows Mobile Platforms, it is currently focusing on the iOS platform. "We're designing for cross-platform compatibility, but we want to provide a working solution as soon as possible," Reavis explained. "The iPad seems to be a solid and popular choice at this time."
iOS support will be available to Partner customers at a nominal additional cost.
